| an update instead of a paper...
i am ill. i have a swollen throat and a fever that developed this afternoon in studio. brandon has the same. oh dorm life. joyous, no? haha. all this, however, to say please excuse any incoherencies which might arise in this entry.
studio today was really really good. voice was the same as always, but it feels good, so no complaints. in movement, though, we did a score that turned out being like 'pool on an egg-shaped table,' which, if you've never done before or heard of, i can't really explain better than a freakin' huge (like most of class) improv of sorts taught to us by the incredible mary overly, based in movement with no real story-line or planned-out logic. it's all about following impulses and letting it happen. all the rest falls into place. it's so freakin' trippy! random words/phrases/sentences abound and it's one of those experiences where you get finished and don't really remember what all just happened. it's just such a release that people rarely get just to let go and do what feels good. jumping, crawling, rolling, dancing, noises like you've never heard but always wanted to make. this is why i love etw. and dispite all it's sponteneity, there is always sense to be made of it in hindsight. always a story that runs through, scattered or abstract though it may be. astounding.
then, in acting with the phenomenal catherine coray, we worked with our scene partners (mine being the amazingly talented claire) on a sort of thoughtless spray of images we get from thinking about our scenes. we then turned those images - with some form direction from catherine - into short pieces. i am constantly dumbfounded and awe-struck when i see the pieces my class creates. i swear, these people are amazing. i could gush about them for days.
we ended the day with a new class/teacher, frances, who will be teaching us/guiding us through choreography and our choreographer projects. we drew names of different choreographers from the judson church dance theatre and researching them and their styles. then, we will create a final dance piece that is a collaboration of what we've learned of their style and what we create. i'm so excited! after getting that assignment, we split into three groups of four, and each group got a few sentences at random from three books she bought that day. we then took the passage and created a short piece of theatre based on it. which was so cool. then we talked about the forms the other groups had used, and the groups traded styles with which we were to create a new piece from the same text. if that makes sense. same text, someone else's style/form. it was breath-taking. seriously.
and all that totally got us questioning the purpose of form. like how form can and does illuminate what you're trying to convey, but at the same time, form is completely arbitrary. it doesn't matter - something new comes out. something just as relevant. it's an incredible experimenting tool when creating theatre. in short, i love studio. i love etw. i love etw'ers. love love love.
the paper i'm avoiding is a mission statement for my artistic work (theatre) that "could be handed out to my audience" outlining my purposes, my style, my all that shit. it's supposed to be an exercise working towards my final writing the essay progression, which, at this point, i'm thinking will be about tim burton. how pimp? especially when you consider that, as a part of the process, i'll be trying to interview him!! hell yeah!! he's my absolute favorite director ever! he's a friggin' genius. i can't wait for charlie and the chocolate factory and corpse bride this summer! mark my words, i will be in one of his movies one day. i will.
i'm done updating (finally). adrian, this is even getting boring to me. love love love. |
